Food that Just Happens

June 8, 2009

We have several varieties of “weeds” in our yard that are edible; pokeberry and daylilies, etc. The two most visible at this time of year are the borage and the lambs quarters (lambs quarters, btw, are selling for $4 or so a pound at the farmer’s market!! so we should maybe sell this stuff…we certainly can’t eat it all even with the help of the chickens who are only too glad to take some of it off our hands).

When we were at Ferry Farm (George Washington’s home from age 6 to adulthood), I was so excited to see the huge clumps of borage at each corner of each of the raised garden boxes! Although I’ve never grown or used borage, I remembered how much you have in your yard, garden-wallah. So nice to see that you are growing and using a plant favored by the real First Family of America!
