FINALLY!!

tomatoes peppers eggplants

So we finally got our tomatos, eggplants, peppers & summer squash in. Several weeks later than we’d intended but we cheated and bought some greenhouse-raised plants so we would be caught up. The seedlings we started are much smaller than they should be right now; they were rather neglected. The eggplants only have two leaves…if I see any eggplants for sale at a farmers market in the next week or two I’m going to buy some for backup in case none of these poor little girls make it.

We started off so well organized too…but now all I know is that everything we put in is heirloom except for the zucchini and yellow squash; everything is also organic. Josh lost track of which seedlings were which when he transplanted them the first time so we aren’t sure what survived and what didn’t. I know we got at least a couple Amish Paste Tomatoes in the ground and another heirloom variety from the market that is good for canning sauces/paste. We’ve got yellow pear tomatoes…and about eight varieties of peppers, from sweet to very hot. I’m not even sure if the surviving eggplants are the purple or white ones, globe or long. So we will wait and see…whatever we get will be wonderful!

peas june 7I saw the first tiny cucumber on the cucumber vines today and the peas are pretty much done producing. We have harvested a lot but still have plenty on the vine to bring in this week.

We put in two kinds of peas – Arrow and Sugar Snap. Both varieties made good use of the trellis and produced well. Arrow peas are for shelling…they are still hanging on the vine. We have been eating the sugar snap peas…the biggest sugar snap peas I’ve ever seen I think, some of them are easily 6 inches long. We haven’t even cooked any yet because they taste so good fresh. We got so so lucky to have this good soil in our backyard. It makes all the difference.

I hope you got some heirloom tomatoes from Atwood, Amy’s greenhouse, since they trace back to her ancestral gardeners.
