Trellis + Peas = Good
The peas that Josh planted on March 28 are taking off…and just as if they know what they are doing they are growing up the trellis that he built for them.
The trellis is very simple, based on Eliot Coleman’s design of a wood frame on which netting is stapled. The peas twine up the net as they get taller. This type of trellis is easy to build, easy to maintain and, best of all, inexpensive. I have read that you can build the base out of metal posts to prevent rot but since we won’t leave the trellis up year-round I don’t think it is necessary, although once the peas are harvested we can use it for green beans to climb and then again for peas in the fall (the trellis is fairly easy to move so we can rotate the peas to a different location).
