how to light up your veggies

March 28, 2009

Remember the shelving fixture that i salvaged?  Well here is what it looks like in combination with the lighting seedlings need.

This consists of two fluorescent fixtures (each fixture contains two bulbs) dangling from some chains that are attached to old spindles from our deck.  The fixtures have little S hooks on them.  They connect the fixtures to the chain and they are easy to adjust the height as the little plants grow…bulbs need to be no more than a couple inches from the seedlings. This keeps them from getting leggy.

Seedlings don’t really need special grow lights since they are only indoors for a few weeks. Our seedlings also get natural light from the window which helps and we did buy full-spectrum fluorescent bulbs for whatever that is worth (maybe nothing – but the plants do seem to be thriving). A windowsill alone is not going to be enough light, just FYI.
