box-o-chix
So our chicks arrived in the mail today. We were supposed to pick them up yesterday but that wasn’t possible. Then we were told they’d arrive Wednesday or Thursday. So when I got home at 4:55 with a notice that a package from the hatchery was at the post office — which closes at 5:00 — I went immediately into panic mode.
We were not set up — the brooder box wasn’t cleaned & it was still in the basement, the heat lamp wasn’t set up so no 95 degree move-in special, no waterer, etc etc.
Anyway, long story short (more details when I’m not so exhausted), I picked up the chicks at 4:59 and, with a little help from my wonderful and available mother, got them into their new home by 9:30. They are peeping like crazy, eating like crazy and pooping like…well, like crazy.
And they are adorable. 3 orange buckeyes with black stripes on their heads, two blackish wyandottes and 2 americaunas. You can already tell which chick is the most bold…she literally jumped into my hands and was the first to climb out of their box. For some reason the buckeyes seem smaller, clumsier and more timid than the other four. Below is a picture of one of the buckeyes.

Thanks for the sweet words; working with you was fun, as I got to see my very capable and creative problem solving daughter at work! Those little dears are worth all the trouble you went to making the brooder fit into its space. Such personality! And hopefully, such great layers-to-be!
