Early Spring Pruning

tree_cut On Saturday — cut up the fallen tree in the backyard and pruned some other trees. Couple reasons for the pruning: there were limbs that needed to be taken off the neighbor’s property & to get more sun in the garden & side yard. Also I wanted to use my new toy (tree saw/pruner). I took off all the branches on 2 maples and 1 ash tree up to a height of 10-12  feet so the trees are still full on top — to shade the house — but sun will hopefully hit the gardens longer during the day.

You really want  to prune your trees earlier in the winter, when all the energy is in the root system & they aren’t using energy to regenerate. Also because that makes it less likely your trees will attract pests/disease since there is less sap and therefore less scent. But I think they’ll be OK
