can’t wait to get our chickens
We pick up our chicks march 23, from Meyer’s Hatchery in Polk, OH. Yes, we could have had them shipped but putting babies in boxes and then mailing them places seems a bit wrong. And anyway, we only live about three hours away and while we are there we will visit Lehman’s.
We are getting Buckeyes, Silverlaced Wyandottes and Americaunas. Americaunas lay multicolored eggs as seen in the picture but mostly I am excited about getting Buckeyes. They are a critically endangered heritage breed and the only breed created entirely by a woman (Mrs. Nettie Metcalf to be exact). Also, they were bred in Ohio so are physically suited to the crappy climate we Buckeyes live in (HOT & HUMID in summer, COLD in winter). As evident from the posts Josh has been writing we have LOTS to do before we are ready to host chickens but we have about 4 weeks to get there and we will. Yay, chickens!

We are so proud of your work to be more connected with the land and with local food producers, and to become more self-sufficient yourselves! Your blog will be a good way for us to keep up with your progress, as well as to obtain good ideas for our own practices. Thanks for the update!
